Pit Bulls are very strong, intelligent and energetic dog breeds. They are descended from bulldogs and terriers. In the United States of America pit bulls are often referred to as a whole group of similar mixed breed dogs such as; American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, American Bully, Staffordshire Bull Terrier and sometimes even American Bulldog. In other countries when people talk about pit bulls they think about American Pit Bull Terriers. They are officially recognized as American Pit Bull Terriers by organizations such as; the American Dog Breeders Association and the United Kennel Club, but they are not recognized by the American Kennel Club.
Historically they came from the United Kingdom but today they are recognized as American dogs. Many countries like Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Venezuela, Singapore, Malaysia, some states in the USA and many others even banned or put special legislation on ownership or breeding of pit bull breeds mainly because of extensive use of them in dog fighting. In the United Kingdom they are banned by legislation with forbidden ownership without an exemption from a British court.
They have a life expectancy of eight to fifteen years. Pit bulls come in many different colors like black, white and buckskin. In terms of size they are medium-sized with male pit bulls who have height from 18 to 21 inches and weight from 35 to 60 pounds. Female pit bulls are a little smaller than males and they are from 17 to 20 inches in height and from 30 to 50 pounds in weight.
When it comes to dog sports, they are the best breed for competition such as; weight pulling, dog agility, flyball, lure coursing, and advanced obedience competition for which they are rewarded with status of “superdog” by The United Kennel Club. Of all 115 dogs that The United Kennel Club gives that special status, 34 have been American Pit Bull Terriers.
They are also good as a working dog. Their inherent qualities such as high intelligence, working discipline, endurance and high energy makes them excellent as search and rescue dogs. Police use them for narcotics and explosives detection and as border patrol dogs.
Pit bulls often get a bad rap, but reality is different from the mainstream view of pit bulls trying to represent them badly. They are known to be friendly and extremely loyal to their owner. Let’s see five of many reasons why some people love their pit bull so much.
1.Pit Bulls Want To Please Their Master
For people who like to have a dog that adores them, pit bulls might be the perfect combination for them. When you decide to get yourself a pit bull dog, you must know that you get a friend for life that would never leave you. No other dog is loyal as a pit bull. Everybody knows that pit bulls are not great as guard dogs because they love people so much and are very eager to please people, especially people who they see as their human family. Pit bulls will do almost anything that their favorite human owner asks him to do just to get praised by them. Be prepared to spend a lot of time with them because they crave a lot of attention and approval, and they like to be around people and make them feel good. Their devotion to the owner can be used to make them bad. Many people who are involved in illegal dog fighting use pit bulls’ loyalty to train them in whey to make them fight anybody who their owner says so. Fortunately those people are in the minority and majority of pit bull owners are great people. If you own any other dog, be aware of possible jealousy from your pit bull because they don’t like to share you with other dogs.
2.Pit Bulls Are Just So Funny
If you want to have a good time, a pit bull is here to bring you joy and a lot of memorizing moments. All of your friends would like to come to you to be entertained by your pit bull. Pit bulls have a burs tubing personality and they love to make their owner laugh. They would be a main star in every party you have.
3.Pit Bulls Aren’t Very Loud
For people who aren’t fans of loud barking dogs, a pit bull would be a great option. They bark rarely. And if they bark, it is usually because they are bored and they need to start doing something to start being amused. Pit bulls are more known to be a heavy breathing breed which is normal for dogs who are hyper energetic.
4.Pit Bulls Are Wonderful With Children
We always want dogs that would go along with our children and become their animal siblings. Given their natural protective capabilities, they can keep children in safe hands, but be careful to train them well and to teach children to behave properly when they are close to pit bulls. And once they develop connections with children they can become best friends for the rest of their lives.
5.The Pit Bull Smile
When you are around dogs all you want is for them to be happy. With Pit Bull you don’t need to make them happy because they already are if they are spending time with you. Their huge smile would make every situation full of happiness and joy. Nothing can turn people who are afraid of pit bulls and who think they are dangerous then their big smiles.
6. Pit Bulls Don’t Need Lots Of Grooming
A lot of people don’t like to spend a lot of time grooming their dog. For them Pit Bulls are a perfect match. They have short coats that don’t need a lot of maintenance. They can be bathed in a couple of minutes. Their fur isn’t very thick or fuzzy so owners don’t need to do much grooming.
7. Pit Bulls Can Be Great Therapy Dogs
When we think about therapy dogs, pit bulls aren’t the dog that first comes to mind. But there are many examples where therapists prefer to choose pit bulls because they are effective and patients also like them. Reasons why pit bulls can be so effective therapy dogs can be that they have great personalities and are very empathetic to people.
